Giving FAQ

How donations work here โ€” and what we can't tell you.

This is not tax advice. Time for Impact is not a tax advisor and cannot tell you what you may deduct. The answers below describe how the platform works so you can take accurate information to your own advisor.

Who actually receives my donation?

Every.org does. When you donate through Time for Impact you are redirected to Every.org, which receives and processes your contribution and grants it to the charity you selected.

Time for Impact never receives, holds, or transmits your money. We are not the recipient of your gift, and your donation is not made to us. We only record that a donation was made so we can unlock the session you booked.

Where does my receipt come from?

From Every.org. They are the organization that received your contribution, so they are the one that can substantiate it.

Time for Impact does not issue donation receipts, and nothing we send you is a receipt. Our confirmation email tells you that your booking is confirmed โ€” it is not proof of a charitable contribution, even where it repeats the amount you gave.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

We can't tell you that โ€” it depends on your own circumstances, and it isn't ours to determine. What we can tell you is how the gift is structured.

Time for Impact currently lists only offerings that volunteers do not sell commercially. Every volunteer confirms this when they publish, and every offering therefore carries a stated fair market value of $0, shown on the booking page before you give. You are not buying a good or service with a market price, so your contribution is not reduced by the value of something received in return.

Every.org receives your contribution and issues your receipt for the full amount you gave. Whether you can deduct it, and how much, depends on things we know nothing about โ€” whether you itemize, your income, and other limits. Rely on the receipt Every.org sends you, and ask your tax advisor.

If a donation ever were made in exchange for something with real market value, the deductible portion would generally be limited to the amount by which the donation exceeded that value. That's precisely the situation we're avoiding by not listing priced offerings โ€” see the next question.

I'm a volunteer. Can I deduct the value of the hours I donated?

No. The value of donated time or services is never deductible.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings in charitable giving, and the answer does not change with your skill level, your professional rate, how much a client would normally pay you, or how much was raised because of your time. There is no deduction for the value of services rendered โ€” not a partial one, not at cost. The IRS addresses this directly in Publication 526.

Separately from this platform, unreimbursed out-of-pocket expenses you incur while performing services for a qualified charitable organization can sometimes be deductible. That rule is unlikely to reach a Time for Impact session, because you are providing your service to another individual who donates โ€” not performing services for the charity itself. If you think you have deductible expenses, take the specifics to your tax advisor.

What you are doing here is real and valuable. It just isn't a charitable contribution by you for tax purposes โ€” the deductible gift, if any, belongs to the donor.

Why does every offering have a fair market value of $0?

Fair market value is what an offering would ordinarily sell for. On Time for Impact it is always $0, because we currently list only things volunteers don't sell commercially โ€” volunteers confirm this explicitly when they publish an offering, and we show the value to donors before they give.

The reason is your receipt. Every.org processes the donation and receipts the full amount as a charitable contribution. If an offering carried a real market price, you would be receiving something of value in exchange โ€” and your receipt wouldn't reflect that. We can't amend a receipt issued by someone else, so instead we keep the platform to offerings where the receipt and the reality match.

This means volunteers who sell a service professionally shouldn't list that service here for now. If that's you, email support@timeforimpact.co โ€” we'd rather hear from you than have you list something that leaves your donor with a receipt that overstates their gift.

A few offerings created before we required this confirmation show no stated value. We say so plainly on those pages rather than implying the value is zero.

Is Time for Impact a 501(c)(3)? Is a donation to Time for Impact deductible?

Time for Impact is organizing as a Washington nonprofit corporation; our formation filing is pending with the Washington Secretary of State. We are not a 501(c)(3) organization and we are not tax-exempt.

That said, it does not affect your gift, because you are not donating to us. Your contribution goes to Every.org, which grants it to the charity you chose. Whatever deduction you may be entitled to is attached to that contribution and to the receipt Every.org issues โ€” not to Time for Impact's status.

Are the charities listed on this site your partners?

No. The charities you see are the ones individual volunteers have chosen to designate as recipients, searched from Every.org's directory. Listing a charity as a designation option is not an endorsement, partnership, sponsorship, or affiliation, and does not imply the organization knows about or supports Time for Impact.

Any charity name or logo shown belongs to that organization and is displayed to help you identify where your donation is going.

Can I get a refund?

Not through us. Once Every.org has processed your donation the funds are on their way to the charity, and Time for Impact has no ability to reverse or refund them. This is true even if the session is later cancelled, or if your donation fell below the volunteer's stated minimum and the booking was not confirmed. Please check the amount and the charity before you give.
